Our Planet - My Fin My Life
At Mega Fortris we understand and believe in the importance of ensuring a safe a stable marine ecosystem. To sustain the wide range of species and maintain a balance in the marine ecosystem.
Mega Fortris have recently joined forces with the World-Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to ensure a safe marine life for Sharks within the Ecosystem.
Sustaining sharks is the key to balanced oceans and seafood
Sharks are at a very prominent threat, it is estimated that at least 100 million shark individuals are killed every year. Sharks are usually sought for fins, meat, leather, liver oil, and cartilage. Shark fins are the most valuable of shark products and are used to make shark fin soup, a traditional Chinese delicacy. The high demand for shark fin is currently the main driver of unsustainable fishing of shark globally.
Malaysia is ranked 9th in the world’s top 20 shark catchers from 2000 to 2010. Mega Fortris understand the importance of Shark existence and have been working with WWF to aid their cause in preventing Shark killing.
Sharks provide numerous benefits to the marine life:
- Sharks help maintain the health of coral reefs and protect vital sea habitats.
- Cutting short sharks’ existence will cut shout our own supply of seafood and food security.
- Thus, the decline of sharks will also affect human survival in the long run because seafood is one of Malaysian’s main protein source.
- Global shark tourism generates revenue of around US$314 million annually and is expected to keep growing to a potential $780 million annually over the next 20 years.
With so much at risk it is essential we all work towards a balanced ecosystem to ensure the stability of marine life.
Mega Fortris aim to work with WWF closer over the next few years to reduce shark killing and work with restaurants to remove shark-fin soup from menu or dining.
